1. MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB
The incumbent will be required to manage a laboratory and site laboratories awarded to the office. He / She will be responsible for all laboratory related tasks, whether it’s on site or in the commercial laboratory. He / She shall be responsible for the implementation, maintenance and improvement of the SGS quality systems.
2. MAIN RESPONISIBILITIES
annual performance appraisals and training for all reporting staff.
Responsible to ensure the accreditation and Heath and Safety regulations requirements are adhered to in and around the laboratory
Responsible for ensuring the correct test methods are followed.
Acquisition of capital equipment and consumables as required by test methods – to be done according to directives.
3. OPERATIONAL INTEGRITY/HEALTH & SAFETY
Adopt safe behavior at all times, exercising due regard for the health and safety of SGS employees, in accordance with SGS policies and procedures.
Always wear relevant PPE and comply with health and safety regul
Competent and qualified to do all tests (TMH 1 and ASTM) in all laboratory divisions including soils, asphalt, seals, concrete / aggregate. (SANAS experience would be beneficial)

Requirements
- 4. QUALIFICATIONS
- Education
- Degree in Civil Engineering or other related qualifications.
- Experience
- 10 years of experience in laboratory management;
- Solid experience in laboratory management and team leading;
- Solid experience and very well familiar with ISO's 9001, 14001, 45001 and 17025;
- Competencies
- Competent and qualified to do quality laboratory control and implementation
- Competent and qualified to supervise and execute all field work
- Be familiar with COLTO
- Knowledge of Health and Safety
- Interpersonal and Leaderships Skills
- Proficiency in Portuguese and English
- Basic literacy and penmanship
- Driver’s License.
Responsibilities
- Ensure that the laboratory and office functions runs smoothly, with excellent quality of service, the saving of manpower cost, which contribute to accuracy, productivity and profitability;
- Ensure all equipment are cleaned and maintained on a regular basis;
- Ensure materials testing are completed in all laboratory division, including soils, asphalt, seals, concrete, aggregate with bench calculation as and when required for testing;
- Submit quotations and tenders to existing and potential clients.
- Ensure meeting budget and L&C
- Verify calibration of equipment according to schedule
- Review and source of resources where necessary
- Complete weekly inspection report;
- Ensure safety in the laboratory – adhering to Health and Safety specifications;
- Assess results of proficiency tests;
- Comply at all times with SGS's Code of Integrity and Professional Conduct.
- Work in accordance with ISO standards and requirements (9001, 17025, 14001 and 45001).
- Report all hazards, near misses and incidents.
