Find Jobs →KRA, M-Pesa and online income in 2026 — what changed
This is the part most international job sites leave out, and it's the part that lands Kenyans in trouble. From early 2026, the Kenya Revenue Authority is actively reconciling M-Pesa and bank statements against declared income. KRA now works directly with Safaricom on large or recurring M-Pesa receipts, and treats unexplained deposits — including freelance and online job payouts — as taxable income.
Practical rules of thumb for Kenyan online workers in 2026:
- If you're receiving roughly KES 50,000+ per monthfrom "unknown" sources (international clients, M-Pesa from non-tills, Payoneer/Wise withdrawals), expect KRA scrutiny.
- File via iTax under the correct income type — usually Business/Professional Income for freelancers and consultants, not employment.
- Keep clean records: invoices, M-Pesa statements, Payoneer/Wise statements, and a clear log of who paid you for what. The audit defence is paperwork.
- Be especially wary of KRA-impersonation scams circulating in 2026 — see the scam section below.
We've written a full practical guide that walks through iTax registration, the right tax band for online income, allowable deductions, and how to handle Payoneer/Wise payouts cleanly:
Online job scams in Kenya — what's circulating in 2026
Five specific scam patterns currently active against Kenyan online job seekers, with the pattern recognition that helps you spot them in the wild.
Fake KRA appointment-letter scam
Email from an @outlook.com address (NOT @kra.go.ke) "offering" a role in KRA's Marketing Department, asking for processing fees. KRA publicly warned about this in early 2026.
Pay-to-apply or "registration fee" jobs
Any "employer" who asks you to M-Pesa a registration fee, medical check fee, or uniform deposit before starting. Real employers never charge you to apply.
Doctored M-Pesa-payment screenshots as "proof"
Recruiters in WhatsApp groups posting fake "Confirmed" M-Pesa screenshots showing testimonials of huge daily earnings. The screenshots are templated and reused across Telegram groups.
Unsolicited WhatsApp / DM job offers
Random WhatsApp message from a "recruiter" you didn't apply to, offering KES 5–10k/day for "data entry" or "social-media liking". Legit employers source from job boards, not cold DMs.
Crypto / gift-card payment requests
An "employer" who needs you to receive payment in crypto, gift cards, or via a personal M-Pesa account (not a business till/paybill). This is laundering pattern, not employment.
Getting paid: how M-Pesa actually works for online jobs
The mechanics matter. Here's how Kenyan online workers in 2026 typically receive money:
- Direct M-Pesa from a local Kenyan employer or client: via Pay Bill or Buy Goods (till number). This is the simplest case — you receive a standard M-Pesa SMS. Safaricom Send Money charges apply on transactions above KES 100.
- International platforms → Payoneer/Wise → M-Pesa: the common path for Upwork, Fiverr, Remotasks, Clickworker, Appen. You set up Payoneer or Wise once, link your M-Pesa as the receiving wallet, and withdraw on demand. Wise tends to be cheaper for direct USD→KES; Payoneer is often required by larger platforms.
- Direct USD wire to a Kenyan bank, then KES withdrawal: used by some enterprise clients. Slower (1–3 days), but no platform fee.
- Crypto / stablecoins (USDT/USDC) → M-Pesa via local OTC:used by some Web3 employers. Higher friction and tax-reporting complexity — we don't recommend it unless your employer explicitly requires it.
Important: all of these payment streams are visible to KRA if they hit your M-Pesa or bank account in Kenya. Treat them as income, log them, and file via iTax. See the tax section above.
